Glaucoma
Glaucoma Treatment and Surgery
Glaucoma is an eye condition where the optic nerve gets damaged. It is generally related to the buildup of pressure inside the eyes.ln most of the cases, it has been found that Glaucoma is hereditary and an old age problem.
Symptoms of Glaucoma
Patients with Glaucoma often do not realize their problem until late because the symptoms develop very late in this disease. Common
symptoms of Glaucoma are like:
- Seeing halos around lights
- Loss of vision
- Eye Pain
- Red Eyes
- Hazy eyes
- Even sometimes stomach upset and vomiting
Causes of Glaucoma
The internal fluid of the eye known as aqueous humor generally flows out of the eyes through a mesh-like channel. Due to any reason this channel gets blocked or the eye starts producing too much fluid, which leads to pressure building up inside the eye which results in damage to optic nerve. This is the most common cause of glaucoma. Most of the time it is considered an inherited disease and at times even experts aren’t able to find out the actual cause.
Other lesser common reasons may be eye injury, severe eye infection, blocked blood vessels inside the eyes, or any other inflammatory conditions.
Glaucoma treatment
There can be various ways to deal with and manage Glaucoma like eye drops, oral medication, laser surgery or microsurgery to decrease the eye pressure. The Glaucoma condition of the patient helps the doctor to understand which of the treatments will help to improve the situation.
Eye Drops —These eye drops help to decrease the rate of creation of the eye fluid or help in the flow out of the excess fluid.
Oral medication— The doctor may also prescribe over-the- counter oral medicines like beta-blocker or carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. These types of drugs help in managing the eye fluid control to improve the Glaucoma eye condition.
Laser Surgery — This is a surgical procedure to stop the fluid blockage or raise the fluid inflow in case the patient has angle-closure or open-angle glaucoma respectively. The Procedures are:
• Trabeculoplasty — Helps in opening the drainage area
• Iridotomy — A small hole is made in the iris area to let the fluid flow freely
•Cyclophotocoagulation — This procedure treats the middle part of the eye to manage excess fluid production.
Microsurgery — This surgical procedure is called trabeculectomy where a channel is created to drain the fluid and ease eye pressure.
