What is Retina?
The Retina is a thin layer of tissues that lies in the back of the eye on the inside. It is located very close to the optic nerve. Retina helps to receive light that the lens has focused, convert the light into neural signals, and send these signals on to the brain for visual recognition. In other words, we can say the retina helps to process the picture from the focused light and leaves it to the brain to interpret the picture.
Retinal Detachment and Retinal Tear
Retinal detachment is a serious condition of the eye that happens when the retina pulls away from the tissue around it. Doctors also call this situation a detached retina.
The retina could tear before it detaches. If the retina gets torn, the fluid inside the eye can leak underneath and separate the retina from its underlying tissue. That is when retinal detachment happens.
Retinal Detachment Symptoms
It might be difficult for patients to understand the symptoms of detached retina because it does not hurt. It can happen without
warning.The following symptoms might be experienced:
- Flashes of light
- lots of "floaters" or small threads in the vision
- darkness or curtain type over the vision
Retinal Detachment Risk Factors
The risk factor becomes more prominent with old age. The risk factors include
- Eye injury or cataract surgery
- Thinning edges of the retina often known as Lattice Degeneration
- Damaged blood vessels because of diabetes i.e. Diabetic Retinopathy
- Severe nearsightedness
- When the vitreous gel of the eye pulls away from the retina also referred to as Posterior Vitreous detachment
Retinal Detachment Treatment
The treatment may include one or more of the following procedures depending on the patient’s eye condition.
- Laser (thermal) or freezing (cryopexy) u— These methods can help in repairing a tear if it's diagnosed early.
- Pneumatic retinopexy- This treatment works well for a tear that's small and easy to close. A tiny gas bubble is injected into the vitreous gel of the patient. It presses against the upper part of your retina to close the tear.
- Scleral buckle— A silicone band (buckle) is sewn around the white of your eye (called the sclera). This band pushes it toward the tear or detachment until it heals.
- Vitrectomy This surgery helps in repairing large tears or detachments. The vitreous gel is removed and replaced with a gas bubble or oil.
