What is the blue cut lens, and why it’s needed?

In today’s fast-developing technological world, most people are exposed to long hours of screen time, either through laptops, desktops, mobile phones or even televisions. The increasing use of such technologically advanced equipment has been a steep rise in the usage of spectacles. Studies have revealed that the most common reason for the rising use of spectacle, irritability, headaches, tiredness etc., can all be attributed to the aforementioned cause. That’s why wearing a blue cut lens is the best option.

The question is, why has there been a sudden increase of such symptoms in people. Ophthalmologists state that it is due to the blue light emitted from the devices so commonly used today. As most people know that blue light is visible in the lowest end of a spectrum, they have the shortest wavelength, and rays with shorter wavelengths are known to emit more energy and thus also called High Energy Visible Light. This blue light is unsafe and harmful for us, especially the eyes, and this is why doctors recommend using blue light glasses to most patients presently.

Our eye structure is such that it can protect itself from certain kinds of light through the cornea and the lens, which shield the light-sensitive retina area present at the posterior part of the eyes. But they cannot filter the blue lights we are exposed to daily. Though some blue light is beneficial, too much exposure is harmful. Study reveals that during COVID-19 lockdown.

Almost 33% of the population is used to blue light-emitting devices for 9-11 hours per day, and nearly 15% is exposed to such rays for more than 12 to 14 hours a day. Though researches do not validate the concern people have about blue light as there is little proof that blue lights damage the human retina, ophthalmologists still advise patients to keep themselves safe by using blue light glasses.

How does blue light affect our eyes?

7 Reasons to Wear Blue Cut Lens
Many patients have queries regarding blue light eyeglasses and why they should be using them. Some of the primary reasons for using blue light eyeglasses are discussed below:

1. Reduce Stress on The Eyes
Continuous use of mobiles or laptops lead to strain in the eye muscles and make people feel stressed in a short period. Blue light eyeglasses help to reflect the blue rays coming from the screens and thus help concentrate better and reduce eye stress.

2. Better Sleep
Just like the way people cannot sleep well in a well-lit room, the same effect happens to a human mind when exposed to too much screen light. It hampers the sleep patterns as the screen light doesn’t allow the sleep-inducing hormone to work properly. Though in the fast and technology-driven world, many people find it challenging to stay away from their devices, the blue coating in their eyeglasses may help them stay away from the harmful effects of the lights and sleep better.

3. Reduces Risk for Eye DiseasesAs already mentioned earlier, the cornea and lenses of our eyes aren’t good at blocking the blue lights. We have always heard that “Too much of anything is not good”, so exposure to too much blue light might have lasting effects in the long term. One leading reason for blindness is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). Usage of Blue Anti reflecting glasses, there is a scope to avoid or delay the conditions which might lead to AMD or any other retinal complications.

4. Fewer Headaches
Blue lights may bring about headaches or migraine pains. Hence, if blue lights entering the eyes are blocked through these specially coated glasses, people may experience a much lesser amount of headaches.

5. Prevents Dry Eyes
Dry eyes, which are often considered a minor disorder, lead to discomfort in the eyes with continuous exposure to screen lights of devices. Blue light glasses help block out the blue lights, which leads to eye dryness.

6. When Routine Change is Not Possible
People can avoid using blue eyeglasses if they can alter their daily routine with less exposure to computers, laptops, mobiles, or televisions. But when that is not possible, blue light eyeglasses are the best option to keep the eye protected.

7. The Blue Light Lens Can Fit Into Any Frame
There is no need to change the existing frame which one is using. In most cases, blue light lenses can be fit in any frame by expert opticians. Also, the price of blue cut lenses ranges from Rs.800 to Rs.2400 in most places. Hence, one can opt for glasses within their range as well. These glasses may also be available with additional features like anti-glare coating, anti UVA and UVB, scratch-resistant, water and dust repellant etc.

It is wise to understand that blue light emissions from devices are here to stay, and hence if one takes such a simple measure of using a blue light eyeglass, they may be able to save their eyes from any everlasting discomfort or damage.
