8 Most Common Problems Faced In Cataract And How To Fix It

Before understanding what problems people face when they get cataracts, we should understand what is Cataract. A cataract is an eye problem where there is a clouding of the usually transparent lens of your eye. People having cataracts generally feels like seeing through cloudy lenses or is a bit like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. Clouded vision caused by cataracts can make it more challenging to read, drive a car (especially at night) or see the person’s face.

An-Noor Eye hospital has conducted over 12000 cataract surgeries for over a decade and have been considered one of the best cataract surgery hospitals in Chennai. Due to our varied experience that we have gained while dealing with a massive number of patients through these years, we have found that the following are the most common problems faced when a person develops cataract problems.

Common Problems faced in Cataract:

  1. Blurring of vision

The most common Cataract problem/symptom which almost all patients have is the blurring of the vision. Cataract generally occurs when proteins build up and form a cloudy layer on the lens. This protein build-up gradually develops and starts interfering with your vision and, unless treated, could lead to total blindness.

  1. Difficulty seeing at night

People might experience difficulty seeing at night since the natural source of sunlight is not available. Due to their clouded vision, it might be challenging to see artificial sources of light at night.

  1. Seeing faded colors

Another symptom suggests that people experiencing problems with Cataract may see the colors around them to be faded than their actual shade of color. It happens since insufficient light enters the eyes due to the protein build-up in the lenses.

  1. Increased sensitivity to glare or sunlight

Sensitivity to light is another symptom for people who develop Cataract. Glaring lights can be painful or hurt the eyes, especially for patients who develop posterior sub- capsular cataracts. This type of Cataract starts from the back of the lens, interferes with the light, and causes problems in reading.

5. Halos/Rings surrounding lights

As in Cataract, we find that there is clouding of the lens; the light which enters gets diffracted. This can lead to seeing halos or rings around the source of light. This might lead to difficulty in driving, especially at night.

6. Double vision in the affected eye

As we understand, due to the clouding of lenses, there is diffraction of light, which might also lead to seeing two or sometimes even more images of a single object. But this generally happens while the Cataract is in the developing stage. Once it grows, more significant this effect may go away.

  1. Need for frequent changes in prescription glasses

Since there is clouding of the lenses in the Cataract, it leads to blockage of light entering the eyes. Hence people often feel the need to use brighter light for reading. If this happens to people, it is necessary to observe their eye situation for a few days and then visit a doctor.

  1. Need for brighter reading light

With progress in the medical scenario, various special kinds of contact lenses are available to cater to different eye problems. A wide range of toric lenses (special contact lenses) is available to deal with the situation of Astigmatism. Even for patients with Astigmatism, lenses like monthly, disposable or long-term lenses are available to suit the needs.

“With an experience of more than a decade, we have been able to identify aforesaid as the most common problems faced by cataract patients. Also, being one of the best eye clinics for cataract surgery, we have found that these symptoms are almost always manageable through proper treatment. “

How to fix the problem of Cataract:

As already stated, a Cataract is an eye problem that is commonly inferred to as entirely treatable. Surgery is recommended when cataracts prevent people from going about their daily activities, such as reading or driving. If one is unable to or uninterested in surgery, the doctor (ophthalmologist) may help you manage your symptoms. They may suggest stronger eyeglasses, magnifying lenses, or sunglasses with an anti-glare coating.

The different types of surgeries or procedures for treating Cataract are:

  •  A device is producing ultrasound waves – Sometimes, a device that produces ultrasound waves may be inserted. These waves help in breaking the cloudy lens. After that, the broken particles are removed, and an intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted in the natural lens capsule.
  • Extracapsular surgery – This is also known as large-incision surgery, where a more significant cut is made so that the entire affected part can be removed in one piece. After that, it is replaced with an intraocular (IOL) lens.
  • Femtosecond laser surgery – This is a technology-aided, computer-guided laser cataract surgery wherein treatment is programmed by the surgeon to break up the affected lens.

Depending on the eye condition of the patient, an ophthalmologist suggests the line of treatment. More than a decade of existence in this field has helped us to earn the reputation of being one of the best cataract surgery hospitals in Chennai. Also, with our primary consultant Dr. Khaleel Ahmed’s more than 20 years of experience in his work area, he has been considered one of the best cataract surgeons in Chennai, with more than 12000 surgeries done by him in this hospital.

Prevention of Cataract:

Even though one might have access to the best cataract surgery hospital in the city, it is always advisable to take care of one of the most vital organs of the body, i.e., the eyes. Everyone must be aware of the fact that “Prevention is better than cure.” So for preventing Cataract one must always take good care of the eyes and also keep in mind the following:

  • Have regular eye examinations.
  • Giving up the habit of smoking
  • Manage other health problems by regular doctor visits or alternate methods like yoga, meditation, etc.
  • Choose a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables
  • Wearing sunglasses while moving out
  • Reduced use of alcohol
